Our Community Mobilisation Officer in Tambura County spoke to Angeline Louis from Nabaria Community Group about the benefits of Listening Clubs.
She said that the Listening Clubs she takes part in have helped to shift some negative social and cultural attitudes towards girls’ education. The programme has made changes in her own house by helping to build good relationship in the family. According to her the priority is to encourage her daughters to stay in school and she normally talks to her daughter about the dangers of early marriage. Before taking part in these community group sessions, her “husband did not value girls’ education. He would keep girls to stay at home looking after the young ones and being overloaded with house chores only preparing them for marriage.” However, after realized the long-term benefits of girls’ education, he has reduced the workload by making sure that the boys share the house chores with their sisters, which affords them time to study.
Angeline is insistent that this is the positive effect of the Listening Club. During these sessions, the community members come together to listen to pre-recorded radio shows that are loaded on SD cards and played on solar-powered, wind-up radios. The Our School radio programmes follow the lives of girls and their families as they struggle to resolve the challenges of going to school.
The local chief spoke to the GESS Community Mobilisation Officer and stated that he appreciates CM activities and that there is need to extend the programme to other communities because he believes it can create a lot of impact.
