Girls' Education South Sudan Cash Transfers 2021

On November 15th, 2021, Girls’ Education South Sudan, (GESS) launched 2021 Cash Transfer payments to schoolgirls across the country.

We are happy to report that over, 439,125 girls received a Cash Transfer by 17th February 2022. This number excludes girls in around 48 schools who haven’t received their Cash Transfers yet due to severe unavoidable circumstances like flood.

This number is inclusive of 395,198 girls from 4,241 primary schools, and 43,927 from 257 secondary schools. Girls in over 48 schools are yet to receive their payment.

The team braved challenges, including insecurity and flooding to ensure that they could reach all areas of the country. Due to such challenges, the process was slightly delayed. The safety of the learners, GESS monitoring, payment teams, and all others involved in the process, was our utmost concern. GESS extends its gratitude to all those who took part in the process to ensure that every rightful girl receive her money.

The process saw a total amount of 2,575,462,400 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) paid to girls. All girls in candidate classes, (Senior 4 and Primary 8) each received 8,400 SSP, while girls in other classes (Primary 5 to Primary 7 and Senior 1, 2, and 3) each received 5,600 SSP.

GESS acknowledges cases of malpractices reported during the process, majority of which have been handled, while others are being investigated by GESS and the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI). GESS and its donors have a zero-tolerance for any malpractice and misappropriation of programme funds.

From the first phase of the GESS programme, Cash Transfers have proved to be a vital element of the Programme in seeing girls afford scholastic material, thereby lifting the financial burden from parents. “When I receive the cash, I feel good because I know I will not ask my mother again to give me money for me to buy school materials and my mother is always happy about that because she can use the money for other things like buying food” Tabisa, learner in Torit.

Cash Transfers are direct cash payments made to schoolgirls to help them afford school-enabling items like books, pens, school uniforms, menstrual management needs, etc., and to lift the financial burden from parents.
